Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.
Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.
Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season
The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.
The A.D. Hollindale Stakes is a Group 2 weight-for-age race held each May at the Gold Coast Racecourse. This racecouse is situated around 70 kilometres south of Brisbane. The race itself is run over a distance of 1800 metres and is worth over $300,000 in prizemoney.
The A.D. Hollindale Stakes is an ideal lead-up to the Group 1 BTC Cup the following week at Doomben. Runners who can last the distance of the A.D. Hollindale Stakes will have no problem with the 1200m track for The BTC, also a weight-for-age race but worth a very alluring $400 000.
Some legendary gallopers have claimed victory at the A.D. Hollindale Stakes including Shogun Lodge who managed two wins in 2000 and 2001, and the great Might And Power (1998) who secured a number of other Group 1 victories including the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate. And in recent years the event has seen increased interest from international entries as well, adding to the status of the race across the globe.
